It's our view that investment success is due mainly to the consistent, ongoing application of several simple principles, a formula available to all investors - at least in theory.
In practice, though, the investment industry often builds barriers to its clients’ success. One crucial barrier is excessive costs.
Another barrier, arguably the most important – which unfortunately also facilitates excessive costs – is the veil of artificial complexity the industry uses to obscure simple but important facts. “All hat, no cattle” is an apt description of most investment industry practices. Similarly, to quote Michael Lewis from The Big Short, in our opinion the single most informative and entertaining book about the 2008 global financial crisis:
“It’s too much to expect the people who run big Wall Street firms to speak plain English, since so much of their livelihood depends on people believing that what they do cannot be translated into plain English.”
